Community Transformation Project
Community transformation project is geared towards changing the orientation of the people towards embracing Nonviolence and understanding several other alternatives to violence. FEHN has successfully carried out this project in Afam and also Gbaran communities in Bayelsa state.
AFAM Oil
Due to the restiveness of youths of Afam, an oil producing community in Rivers state of Nigeria, playing host to multi-billion dollar investments of the oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the oil firm kept on experiencing incessant shut downs of their operations. Upon seeking FEHN’s intervention, a workshop on Dialogue and Civil behavior, using the Kingian Nonviolence approach, was conducted and the community pledged co-operation. In attendance were youths, elders and traditional rulers. It is noteworthy to state that since FEHN’s intervention till date the AFAM communities have remained peaceful and SPDC has had a smooth sail of operations. This is a function of FEHN’s success in the institutionalization of the ideals of Dialogue and Civil behavior using the Nonviolence approach.
FEHN helped to set up a Youth Conflict Management Committee (YCMC) which is still running till date.
Community Relations Services / Interface
Because of the incessant shut down of SPDC’s operations, they needed a competent organization to take care of their Community Relations Services/Interface-thus FEHN was contracted as specialists in conflict management. The scope of work includes but not limited to ensure zero disruption of SPDC’s operations, provide continuous proactive community relations services in the assigned area/district, promote inter and intra community harmony, network with various community groups and influential/opinion leaders to obtain intelligence reports and advise the CR team, encourage community leaders to have a positive disposition for dialogue as a means for negotiation and conflict resolution.
FEHN just concluded a 6 month pilot project of about 22 communities for SPDC. Upon the assumption of duty, FEHN organized a workshop on Dialogue and Civil Behavior – The Nonviolence Approach. The workshops were organized in three different venues as follows: On the 6th – 7th February, 2009 the Owaza workshop was held. On the 9th – 12th February, 2009 Umuorie and Elelenwo communities respectively had their workshop. At the end of the workshops the people of the community thanked FEHN for bringing a new world changing philosophy. They pledged their acceptance to conform to the ideals of civil behavior and dialogue. The communities are as follows: Elelenwo, Rumuobiakani, Etitioha Ipu-Owaza, Igiriukwu-Owaza, Ipu West-Owaza, Uzuaku, Umuahala, Umuorie, Umuokwo, Isi-obehie, Ipu-south, Isinteke, Umudeokwara, Odagwa, Okoroagu I, Opuala Okoroagu, Odagwa II.
FEHN is currently using the Nonviolence approach to bring about Civil Behavior in Bayelsa (a hot bed of crisis) which is one of the most productive areas in SPDC’s operations.
